Animating resources for intergalactic justice, an X||Dinary Stories workshop at Space2
Gipton, June, 2023, something rumbles in the fields behind the old fire station as vast engines fire up, engineers rush around to make their final adjustments. A rocket is about to be launched, on board the ship 12 billionaires are hoping to experience the ultimate in tourist luxury. Meanwhile, back in Gipton, the response on the ground is far from straight forward.

Using mobile phones, toys, string, found objects and recycled materials, this workshop speculated on alternative ways to frame space travel, re-thinking the meaning and intention of the various missions to colonise Mars and beyond.
The two groups created short videos speculating on the distribution of resources and effort currently put into projects such as Virgin Galactic and SpaceX. Asking:
● How else could the money be spent?
● Who should be in charge?
● If we do find life beyond Earth, what are our hopes and responsibilities for that life?
● Can we explore space without harming it?
One film was generated by a group in the role of activists protesting against having a Space Agency in Gipton, the other group took on the role of marketing for space tourism.
Many thanks to Space2, artists & staff – our collective creativity is our common wealth.
